About Buton Island Discovery Co.
Buton Island Discovery Co. is the Sulawesi Wolio sultanate cultural and diving division of PT Juara Holding Group, an Indonesia-based travel and experience curation group founded in 2018. We design boutique trips, expeditions, and stays for international travelers who value depth over brochures.
What we do
We focus exclusively on buton island and adjacent experiences. Our team includes Indonesian guides, marine biologists, historians, and travel photographers — all with primary residences in the destinations we sell. We do not operate as a wholesaler reseller; every trip is built and run by our own ground team.
Our team
PT Juara Holding Group runs with 32 specialists across operations, ground guides, content, and customer concierge. Roughly 80% of our staff are Indonesian nationals based in the regions we operate. Our content writers have lived experience in the destinations they cover — not desk research.
Why we exist
Indonesia has 17,508 islands. Most travel sites recycle the same 12 destinations. We exist because the other 17,496 are interesting, photographable, and accessible — but require local knowledge to do right. Our brand division Buton Island Discovery Co. covers Sulawesi Wolio sultanate cultural and diving specifically.
Editorial standards
Content on this site is written by people with verified experience in Indonesia tourism. Pricing is honest (we publish ranges, including operating cost breakdowns). We do not accept payment for inclusion in our recommendations. When we link to external operators, those are partners we work with directly, not affiliates.
Sustainability
PT Juara Holding Group contributes 8% of trip revenue to local community funds and conservation projects in the regions we operate. Reports published quarterly to clients on request.

The untouched allure of Buton Island
Imagine a place where ancient royal whispers blend with the vibrant hum of an untouched coral reef, a corner of Indonesia where time seems to slow, inviting deeper connection. Buton Island, nestled in Southeast Sulawesi, remains one of Indonesia’s best-kept secrets, a verdant jewel largely unmarred by mass tourism. While many travelers flock to Bali or Lombok, Buton offers a profoundly different proposition: an authentic encounter with a rich cultural heritage and pristine natural wonders that feel truly discovered rather than merely visited. This island, an expanse of approximately 4,400 square kilometers, is a microcosm of Indonesia’s incredible diversity, boasting an intricate tapestry of history, biodiversity, and community life.
Our focus on Buton is not by chance; it is a deliberate choice rooted in a deep appreciation for its unique character. Here, the legacy of the Wolio Sultanate, which flourished for over 500 years, is still palpable in its ancient fortresses, royal ceremonies, and the daily lives of its people. This historical depth offers a captivating counterpoint to the island’s breathtaking natural beauty, from its secluded white-sand beaches to its dense, biodiverse rainforests. For the discerning traveler, Buton represents the ultimate luxury: the privilege of experiencing a destination in its most genuine form, far from the well-trodden paths, guided by those who call this extraordinary place home.
Crafting journeys of profound discovery
At Buton Island Discovery Co., we believe that true luxury lies in authenticity, exclusivity, and the opportunity for profound personal growth. Our approach to travel is meticulously curated, designed to transcend the superficiality of standard tourist itineraries. We don’t just show you Buton; we immerse you in its essence, creating bespoke journeys that resonate with your individual interests and desires. Whether your passion lies in exploring vibrant underwater ecosystems, delving into centuries of sultanate history, or simply connecting with local communities in a meaningful way, our expeditions are crafted to deliver unparalleled depth and insight. We prioritize quality over quantity, ensuring that every moment, every interaction, and every vista contributes to an unforgettable narrative of discovery.
Our commitment to responsible tourism is woven into the fabric of every trip we design. We partner exclusively with local communities, ensuring that the benefits of your visit directly support the preservation of Buton’s cultural heritage and natural environment. This philosophy extends to our choice of accommodations, often featuring charming boutique stays or eco-lodges that blend seamlessly with their surroundings, offering comfort without compromising authenticity. Our expert team, comprised of local marine biologists, historians, and cultural guides, provides not just information, but genuine insight, sharing their deep knowledge and personal stories. They are the conduits through which you gain an intimate understanding of Buton, fostering connections that extend far beyond the typical tourist experience. We understand that luxury travelers seek not just comfort, but enrichment, and our journeys are meticulously designed to deliver both in equal measure.
Immersive experiences, authentic connections
The experiences we curate on Buton Island are as diverse and captivating as the island itself. For those drawn to the ocean, Buton’s pristine waters are a diver’s paradise, forming part of the Coral Triangle, a global epicenter of marine biodiversity. While Wakatobi National Park is renowned, Buton’s adjacent reefs offer similarly spectacular underwater vistas, often with fewer crowds. The waters surrounding Buton boast visibility often exceeding 30 meters, revealing vibrant coral gardens teeming with kaleidoscopic fish, majestic sea turtles, and elusive reef sharks. Our marine biologists lead intimate snorkeling and diving excursions, sharing their expertise on the delicate ecosystems and helping you identify rare species, transforming each dive into an educational adventure. You might even spot a dugong gracefully gliding through seagrass meadows.
Beyond the aquatic marvels, Buton invites exploration of its rich cultural landscape. We arrange exclusive visits to the historic Keraton Buton, the fortified palace complex of the Wolio Sultanate in Baubau, where you can witness ancient rituals and explore a unique wooden mosque built without nails. Engage in interactive workshops with local artisans, learning traditional weaving techniques or the intricate art of making *kain Buton*, the island’s distinctive handwoven fabric. Culinary journeys are also a highlight, offering opportunities to taste authentic Wolio cuisine, from fresh seafood dishes to unique local delicacies prepared with spices historically traded through Buton. Our expeditions are designed to provide a holistic immersion, balancing adventure and relaxation with profound cultural engagement, leaving you with not just memories, but a deeper understanding of this extraordinary Indonesian island. We believe that the most valuable souvenirs are the stories you collect and the connections you forge, and Buton Island offers an endless canvas for both.
